Jannik Schroeder, Organ Concert
3 x 3 - Mendelssohn, Bach, Vierne
Jannik Schroeder, music director and organist of the Church of the Resurrection in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, performs an exciting organ concert. Three works with the ordering number three from different centuries — 3 x 3, so to speak — offer a colorful spectrum of magnificent music, performed on the great EUROPA ORGAN “Felix Mendelssohn,” built by W. Sauer..
For this production, we set up all key microphones in duplicate, connecting them both to an analog recording system and, separately, to a digital recording system. This allows for a direct comparison of analog vs. digital recording.
Analog Tape Recording
For the analog recording, we used a classic main microphone setup consisting of an AB 60 with Josephson C617SET. As spot microphones, we placed an array of Josephson C42 cardioids about 4 meters in front of the organ. In addition, a wide AB system made up of KM183 omnidirectional microphones (mounted as boundary microphones) was used as ambient microphones. .
The eight microphone channels were mixed with an analog mixer. The resulting stereo signal was recorded on ¼-inch tape (SM468) at 15 in/s using a sonically optimized Telefunken M15A tape machine. The master original tape was subsequently digitized at high quality with a sampling rate of 192 kHz.

Digital Recording
For the digital recording, we used an AB 60 main microphone system (Josephson C617SET). As spot microphones, we employed an MS system (C617SET omni plus Neumann KM-A + KK120 figure-8) as well as Neumann KM184 cardioids placed about 4 meters in front of the organ. In addition, a wide AB system made of Neumann KM183s (omnis, mounted as boundary microphones) was used as room microphones. For surround sound, we added a center microphone..
The microphone signals were amplified and recorded in 192 kHz sampling rate by utilization of an Acousence 16 channel mic preamp and analog digital converter. The resulting digital signals were transmitted to an audio pc by optical fiber. Later in the studio the digital mixing was performed using Harrison Mixbus.
